Great Speeches and Manifestos: A Window into French Culture

French culture has been shaped over centuries through the power of words—by forging a common language, French, and by rallying around shared goals: from the Résistance during World War II to the growing awareness of minority voices such as women and immigrants.

In this course, we explore the speeches and manifestos that shaped France’s political and cultural identity. From the 1549 manifesto in defense of French language, through revolutionary-era oratory, to key addresses of the French Republic, and revolutionary social and political declarations on education, law, human rights, women’s rights, and colonialism.

Along the way, students gain insight into the art of speech itself—its rules, strategies, and rhetorical foundations.

M.A. and Ph.D. students may pursue research projects in this rich and inspiring field.
