Dr. Alon Shalev - bio

Dr. Shalev is a Research Associate at the Jonathan Sacks Institute at Bar-Ilan University and a Research Fellow and faculty member at the Shalom Hartman Institute. His work centers on the philosophy of meaning, human flourishing, and the examined life—particularly from a Jewish perspective—with a strong focus on ethics and political philosophy.

He earned his Ph.D. in Jewish Thought from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Haifa. His book, Rabbi Yitzchak Hutner’s Theology of Meaning, was published by De Gruyter–Brill.

Beyond academia, Dr. Shalev is deeply engaged in public intellectual life. He has served as Deputy Editor of Hashiloach—the Israeli Journal of Ideas and Public Policy—and as Research Coordinator for ITIM – The Jewish Life Advocacy Center. He is a member of the joint task force on polarization in Israel convened by Penima and the Office of the President of Israel, as well as the Van Leer Institute’s “Beyond the Liberal Imagination” political philosophy forum.

Dr. Shalev has received multiple grants and awards for both his academic and public-facing work, including the Karl Bender Fund Award for the Promotion of Philosophical Discourse in Israel and a grant from the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture.
