Mission

The Jonathan Sacks Institute at Bar-Ilan University has been established to promote engagement with Rabbi Sacks' ideas at every level of academic and intellectual discourse and to develop future leaders in Israel guided by his vision.

The Institute's academic mission seeks to weave Rabbi Sacks' ideas into scholarly, intellectual, and policy-related discussions, particularly regarding contemporary social issues. The Institute will provide a scholarly forum where thinkers of all backgrounds and perspectives can deeply engage with his ideas, enriching both scholarly discourse and public understanding.

The leadership development mission aims to build a diverse network of exceptional Institute alumni who can influence Israeli society. Rabbi Sacks viewed Israel, at the intersection of multiple communities and belief systems, as uniquely positioned to demonstrate how universal and particular identities can coexist. Through rigorous academics, peer engagement, and civil society interactions, Institute students will develop practical skills to implement these values in their future leadership roles.

The Institute harnesses this diversity to advance Rabbi Sacks' vision of societal leadership— one that embraces both difference and unity. By fostering deep connections across cultural and religious boundaries, the Institute cultivates leaders who can strengthen Israeli democracy and social cohesion, turning the challenge of diversity into a source of national resilience.
