When philosophers claim that human beings are equal, they typically mean that they are equal in moral status, that is, in the degree to which they and their interests ought to be considered from a moral point of view. One of the central questions in my research concerns what confers moral status on a given entity. Is moral status grounded in consciousness, in rationality, or in other properties?
