
Prof. Tova Ganzel

Tova Ganzel is an Associate Professor in the Multidisciplinary Department of Jewish Studies and serves as the Head of the School for Basic Jewish Studies at Bar-Ilan University. She also coordinates Cramim, the Jewish Studies Honors Program. Her research focuses on the Hebrew Bible within the broader context of the ancient Near Eastern world, with special emphasis on prophetic literature and temple-centered communities.
Her recent work explores the Book of Ezekiel in light of Neo-Babylonian culture, as well as the temple and its community during the Persian period, especially in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah. She also examines the development of biblical criticism in Jewish thought from the eighteenth century onward, and the role of women as Halakhic professionals.
Prof. Ganzel has been awarded two Israel Science Foundation (ISF) grants for her pioneering studies on Ezekiel’s visionary temple and on the temple community in Ezra–Nehemiah. Her publications include monographs, edited volumes, and numerous scholarly articles. She is actively involved in organizing academic conferences, serving on editorial boards, and engaging in public scholarship.

Call for Applications: PhD Fellowship - Temple Life in Persian-Period Judah
Applications are invited for a PhD fellowship as part of a research project on temple life in Judah under the Persian Empire. Funded by an ISF grant, the project integrates biblical texts, Mesopotamian archives, and archaeological data to examine the role of the Jerusalem Temple within its broader imperial context. The fellowship includes a monthly stipend, participation in seminars and conferences, and potential support for research travel. Candidates should have a strong academic background in a relevant field and an interest in comparative research on ancient temples.
