Emotion Dynamics in Depression

Understanding the Dynamics of Positive Affect and Their Role in Depression

Depression is characterized not just by impaired negative affect, but also by impaired positive affect. Impaired positive affect can be seen in depressed patients who experience a loss of interest and pleasure in daily activities, which often results in avoiding pleasant situations. Patients with depression see the restoration of positive affect as a primary treatment goal, over reducing negative affect. Yet, understanding positive affect remains a field that has only recently gained research focus and will be further examined in the current study. This study is novel because it offers a new, theoretically informed way to examine multiple facets of positive affect duration using advanced methodologies. In addition, we intend to examine an intervention aimed at normalizing positive affective experiences that could ultimately lead to the refinement of clinical interventions.
