"A living face is not enough to photograph with words" for a string quartet, string orchestra and fixed media

Shai Cohen, 2024

"A living face is not enough to photograph with words" for a string quartet, string orchestra and fixed media | Premier. Tel-Aviv Soloist Orchestra, conductor Barak Tal. October 26, Tel Aviv Culture Center, Zucker hall, October 27, Haifa, Rappaport Hall.

The title of the piece was taken from Natan Alterman's witty writing, in a list about 'A Trip to the International Colonial Exhibition in Paris 1931'. This title corresponds with a compositional principle that creates a secondary discourse language with recorded materials, arising from the playing of the orchestra and historical violin performances, as recorded by various virtuosos throughout the 20th century. Transitions between a concrete space (performed live by the quartet and the orchestra) and a recorded and processed fictional space (which is diffused through speakers to the environment) emphasize on the one hand the absent presence of the physical gesture and on the other hand the historical qualities embedded in the recorded objects, which function as anonymous echoes and memories of "then and there".
