The Physics Behind Efficient Urban Searching

Researchers from Bar-Ilan University, in collaboration with counterparts in China, analyzed over 2.3 billion GPS data points from approximately 40,000 taxi drivers to identify what makes professional drivers more efficient. The team discovered that the most successful drivers often employ a counterintuitive strategy by moving slowly and focusing on nearby opportunities rather than covering large distances quickly. The study, which links human mobility with principles from physics and animal behavior, offers new insights into efficient search strategies in complex urban environments.
