Regulation and Environmental Policy MA Program

In recent years, governments have made extensive use of regulatory tools to oversee activities in various sectors of the economy. This trend has gained further momentum with the expansion of privatization in a range of public services, which has shifted the state’s role from being a direct provider of public services to acting as a regulator. Various scholars use the term “regulatory capitalism” to describe the economic regime that characterizes the industrialized world in the early 21st century. The environmental sector is one of the fields in which the use of innovative regulatory tools is particularly widespread, placing it at the forefront of regulatory knowledge in general.

The study of regulation requires an interdisciplinary approach that draws on diverse theoretical and methodological tools. The Master’s Program in Regulation and Environmental Policy offers students a systematic exploration of regulation, addressing both general theories of regulation and their specific application to the environmental field. Students in the research track will be able to conduct studies using a variety of research methods employed in both law and the social sciences.

The program is built around several core courses, alongside electives offered by the Faculty of Law and the Department of Geography and Environment. In addition, the program requires students to take several supplementary courses (as part of the mandatory requirements) depending on their academic background.

The goal of the program is to expose students to regulatory theory in general and to its applications in the environmental field, equipping them with tools for conducting research in this area as well as for practical work in environmental regulation and related fields such as enforcement, public health, and local government.

The program is intended for graduates of Law and Geography and Environment, as well as graduates of the natural and social sciences. It is suitable for those interested in environmental and natural resource regulation, as well as for those with a broader interest in regulation. Outstanding students who complete the thesis track and meet the admission requirements may continue to doctoral studies in the Faculty of Social Sciences or the Faculty of Law.
