Heritage Language Development across Lifespan

At Professor Meir's lab, research focuses on heritage languages such as Russian, English, and Hebrew, investigating their morphosyntax, lexicon, and pragmatics to understand the developmental trajectories of heritage language grammar. These trajectories are analyzed within three scenarios: intake failure (formerly referred to as incomplete acquisition),  attrition or loss, and the emergence of a new variety in contact situations. Additionally, the research examines underlying language-internal mechanisms that trigger divergences from the baseline, considering  restructuring under cross-linguistic influence from the dominant language and/or  shrinkage under diminished input.
