Prof. Ehud Weiss
Head of the laboratory
Research in my laboratory is in the field of archaeobotany. This is multidisciplinary research that involves identification of plant remains found at archeological sites from all periods and the processing of this information in order to obtain new insights on several levels. On the biological level, this field brings the dimension of time in the evolution of plant species and plant societies.

Dr. Anat Shenkman (Hartmann)
Laboratory manager
My research explores archaeological sites from the Neolithic period through the Islamic period. It focuses on key sites such as Gilgal (PPNA) – beginning of agriculture, the submerged site of Atlit-Yam (PPNC), a pantry at Tel Etun (Iron II) - Sennacherib's campaign, the Bar-Kokhba revolt caves in the Judean Desert, and Yavneh East. I participated in excavations such as Tel Etun and Yoram Cave

Dr. Suembikya (Sue) Frumin
Laboratory manager
Laboratory manager; the archaeobotanist of the Tell es-Safi/Gath Archaeological Project (since 2012).
I work within the frame of lab projects, studying plant use in the Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Bronze Ages, Iron Age (incl. Philistines’ rites), Persian, Hellenistic, Roman, and early Muslim times. To address the patterns and plants’ role in human history, I integrate data from plants' ecology, biogeography, and ethnobotany. In addition, I am interested in the history of botanical research in Israel.

Dr. Yoel Melamed
Director of the seeds collection
An Archaeobotanist and plant ecologist who studies seed/fruit morphology to reconstruct ancient climate, economy, and landscape from plant remains. Focus on prehistoric Hula Valley sites, particularly Benot Ya'aqov Bridge and other archaeological sites like Rosh Zayit. Conduct field studies, identifying plants and monitoring ecological changes. Teach botany, archaeobotany, and plant ecology.

My research focuses on deals with the botanical finds from Tel Tsaf, a single-layer site from the Middle Chalcolithic Period in the Beit She’an Valley. A large variety of well-preserved seeds was discovered at this site. In addition, hundreds of olive pits were discovered, an unprecedented amount in an area not known for growing olives. In the study, I will seek to clarify the significance of this finding. Other research directions I would like to pursue are ecological analysis and genetic sequencing and processing.

I organize the seed collections at the laboratory, organize and index Dr. Ludwing Pinner’s wheat collection from the 1920’s and 1930’s. I am currently working on a database of all archaeobotanical finds in the southern Levant.

Research title: Spatio-temporal meta-analysis of the archaeobotanical data from the entire Near-east
In my research, I use various spatial and analytical tools to examine the evolution and ecology of wild species associated with humans and agriculture—from the dawn of civilization to the modern era. In this study I use an innovative quantitative meta-analysis of past research findings from Israel and its adjacent regions.
