Climate Ethics

Massive releases by humans of greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere cause climate changes around the globe which in turn cause grave harms. This fact creates significant moral obligations, in particular to mitigate climate change. Thus far my research in climate ethics has focused on the ethics of carbon offsetting. The idea behind offsetting is that for every unit of GHG that one causes to be emitted, they fund a project that will cause a equal unit of GHG to be removed from the atmosphere, thereby maintaining a net-zero contribution to climate change. Some have thought that therefore emitting and offsetting is morally equivalent to reducing emissions to zero. I argue that this is a mistake.
