Enhancing Verbal Creativity
My research focuses on creativity and the cognitive abilities that support creative thinking. In my lab, we examine the generation of novel metaphors as a key measure of verbal creativity, particularly in individuals with autism spectrum disorder. Across a series of studies, we found that individuals with autism consistently produced more original and creative metaphors than typically developing peers, a finding that was surprising at the time. More recent work extends this line of research to the neural mechanisms of creativity, examining how modulation of cognitive control networks influences novel metaphor generation. In addition, my work explores the relationship between art and creativity and how art can serve as a tool to enhance creative cognition.
