My research examines ethnic minorities in China, especially Uyghurs and Tibetans, and the ways in which ethnic, religious, and national identities are shaped under conditions of political control, social change, and encounters between tradition and modernization. It combines Chinese-language sources, literature, public discourse, and historical analysis of Western China and Central Asia.
