When Computers Speak Laws: Legislative Engineering in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

The digital acceleration and technological transformations that change our world also seep into and affect the legal world. In this article, we examine their potential effect on a legal field that has not yet received sufficient attention: the process of formulating and drafting laws. The article offers an innovative approach that we call "legislative engineering". By examining the common similarities between writing software code and drafting legislation, we propose to adopt principles from the world of software engineering into the process of drafting legislation. We further examine the transformative effects that may apply in the process of drafting legislation as a result of these transformations.
