Animals appear more often in the kabbalistic texts with which I deal. An initial study of mine focused on medieval kabbalists who thought about what beings lived before extinction, and what transformations animals undergo in the future. Intertwined with these visions was the question of what is a human and what is the ideal relationship between humans and animals.
The culmination of these ideas, as I showed, led to the birth of a series of short kabbalistic stories in which animals become kabbalistic masters.
This topic have brought me to be interested in what is a human, what is an animal and how should we be thinking about animal-human studies. Currently, I am reading certain kabbalistic texts through the prisms of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, Kafka’s animal stories, and central Australian indigenous songspirals.
