Academic Biography
Prof. Gila Prebor completed her studies at Bar-Ilan University, where she earned a B.A. in Bible Studies and Bibliography and Librarianship (1990), a Teaching Certificate from the School of Education (1991), an M.A. in Bible Studies (1996), and a Ph.D. from the Department of Information Science (2004). Her doctoral dissertation focused on "Sefer Ha-Ziquq" by Domenico Irosolimitano (1555–1621) and its influence on Hebrew printing.
Since 2006, Prof. Prebor has served as the editor of "Alei Sefer: Studies in Bibliography and in the History of the Hebrew Book, Printed and Digital," published by the Department of Information Science at Bar-Ilan University, in collaboration with Prof. Dov Schwartz. This journal, one of the few in the world dedicated specifically to Hebrew bibliography and the history of the Hebrew book, continues to publish groundbreaking research in the field. A double volume (XXXIV–XXXV) featuring the latest studies in these areas was recently published.
Research Interests and Expertise
Prof. Prebor’s research focuses on the intersection of traditional Hebrew bibliography and cutting-edge digital methodologies. Her areas of expertise include:
Information Organization: Metadata, classification methods, and cataloging.
The History of the Hebrew Book: Hebrew printing, bibliography, and the study of Hebrew manuscripts.
Codicology and Paleography: Analyzing the physical and scribal aspects of historical documents.
Censorship of Hebrew Books: Examining the historical impact of censorship on Jewish literature.
Digital Humanities: Leveraging advanced technologies, such as Linked Data and AI, to research and preserve Hebrew cultural heritage.
