Regenerative Medicine and Diabetes Research
Our lab is dedicated to the science of regenerative medicine, the study of how to repair or replace damaged tissues. While our primary focus is on regenerating insulin-producing pancreatic β-cells, which are lost in diabetes, our broader goal is to uncover general principles of tissue regeneration that can be applied across multiple biological systems.
What sets our lab apart is the integration of advanced mathematical tools from formal logic into biological research. By constructing predictive models of tissue behaviour, we identify the desired interventions needed to trigger effective and targeted regenerative responses.

Treating Diabetes with Mathematics
Dr. Piran developed a breakthrough method for treating diabetes using an algebraic modelling approach that predicts the regeneration of beta cells in the pancreas.
